Origin and Mythological Significance of Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela has its roots in the mythological story of Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean where gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) churned the ocean of milk to get the Amrit, the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu is said to have flown away with the pot of nectar from the Asuras and spilt some drops of it at four places - Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.
This mela is held at these places in rotation and each place hosts the event every 12 years. The sacred confluence is called Triveni Sangam where pilgrims take baths to wash away their sins and get liberation. The Mela taking place in Prayagraj is Maha Kumbh Mela as it is taking after 144 years
Significance of Prayagraj as Tirtharaj
Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is considered a holy city in Hindu spirituality. It is called Tirtharaj, meaning King of Pilgrimages. Prayagraj is the hub of many important rituals and traditions. The Triveni Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati is considered one of the most sacred places for Hindus and hence the Maha Kumbh Mela held here is the biggest and holiest of all Kumbh Melas. Taking a dip at the Sangam is considered auspicious during the Kumbh and is believed to cleanse the soul and give spiritual benefits.

Purna Kumbh Mela - Held every 12 years in Prayagraj. It is the complete cycle of a major planetary alignment. This Kumbh is the biggest of all Kumbh Melas and is celebrated with elaborate rituals, snans and gatherings of saints and devotees.
Ardh Kumbh Mela - It is celebrated every 6 years in Haridwar and Prayagraj. It is the "halfway" mark between two Purna Kumbh Melas and attracts millions of devotees who come for snans and spiritual discourses. Though smaller in scale than Maha and Purna Kumbh Melas, Ardh Kumbh has great religious significance.
Magh Mela - Occurs every year in the month of Magh (January-February) in Prayagraj. This Mela is a precursor to Kumbh Mela and every 12 years it becomes Purna Kumbh Mela. Kalpavasis stay by the Sangam for a month and focus on spiritual practices like prayer, fasting and snans.

- Juna Akhara: The biggest and oldest sect of sadhus, famous for the Naga Sadhus (ascetics who have renounced the world).
- Niranjani Akhara: Sadhus who worship Vishnu and Shiva.
- Mahanirvani Akhara: One of the oldest, focused on spiritual growth and asceticism.
